Farm Share Week 14 (Sept 4-6, 2013)

Happy back to school everyone! I’m going to keep it brief but meaningful this week.

Half Shares
• Spinach
• Eggplant (or zucchini)
• Buttercup squash
• Grape tomatoes (great for lunches)
• Romaine lettuce
• Mini red romaine lettuce (a bonus item as it’s teeny)
• Carrots
• Parsley (if you are adventurous, you may want to try making tabouleh)
• Chinese cabbage (tasty in stir-fries and soups)
• Raddichio/chicory/turnips/turnip greens
• Cantaloupe/watermelon

Whole Shares
• Spinach
• Eggplant (or zucchini)
• Buttercup squash
• Grape tomatoes (great for lunches)
• Romaine lettuce
• Mini red romaine lettuce (a bonus item as it’s teeny)
• Carrots
• Parsley (if you are adventurous, you may want to try making tabouleh)
• Chinese cabbage (tasty in stir-fries and soups)
• Raddichio/chicory/turnips/turnip greens
• Cantaloupe/watermelon
• Field tomatoes
• Radish
• Red swiss chard
• Rhubarb
• Zucchini
• Green peppers
• Beets

And a few ideas for you….

Stuck with zucchini you don’t know what to do with. Try slicing and using the zucchini instead of crust (could work for eggplant also, though you might want to salt the slices and let them sit to reduce bitterness)

Overwhelmed with another watermelon? It makes wonderful juice or smoothies, or can be paired with feta and fresh mint for a delicious salad.

I’m about to try a spinach, tomato and quinoa frittata tonight. Feel free to add your own recipes in the comments sections.

    Hi Jennifer

Can you tell me why you are selling corn and broccoli on Saturday to the public but none was in any of the shares, either whole or half. Plus why do half shares keep getting watermelon but no cantaloupe? And why can’t half shares get beets also if you are selling beets to the public? It seems that we mostly get lettuce, lettuce, lettuce and more lettuce but none of the good veggies or else they are such little portions once in a while? Zucchini and egg plant are not anywhere near broccoli and corn or cauliflower status and they grow like weeds. And last question: why did we keep getting the big cucumbers but no little ones, yet you have jars of pickled cukes for sale? The smaller cukes taste way better than those big overgrown big seed ones. I would think that you would give the shares a better variety rather than public sales as we give you money ahead of the season. When you get a chance, please answer my questions. My friend has gone up there a couple times and was thinking of buying a share, but then saw what I had delivered to me and she changed her mind. I was disappointed to hear that better veggies were for sale on Sat. than what I receive. I was thinking of getting a whole share next year just to get those extra veggies as they are the tastier ones but I didn’t see corn on the whole share. Just a thought, but maybe you should plant less lettuce and more of the good veggies like broccoli, corn, cauliflower, asparagus, beets, butternut squash. I’m hoping you have lots of potatoes and yams coming!!

    Thanks.

  3. Hi Helen,

We planted lots of broccoli this year but had major problems with bugs eating the heads. It is very hard to control and that’s why the farm doesn’t grow broccoli other than for the farm shares. The 15 or so bunches we managed to salvage ended up at the store because I try to keep everyone’s box the same and I needed over ten times that quantity to fill each share with one. I, too am disappointed in the yields of broccoli and cauliflower this year. We grow mostly field cucumbers and only a tiny amount of pickling cucumbers that Jannette used to make a few jars of pickles. I put lettuce in the half shares (normally one head) each week as I feel like it is an item most people use on a regular basis. The corn is not grown by us so I only use it if I have nothing else to put in the boxes, like this week. It’s been a very challenging year to grow organic veggies and we appreciate the Farm Share customers that help make it possible.

Thanks for letting me know your concerns. We are doing the best we can to send a variety that will please different tastes. We send out a survey every year at the end so that people can let us know their favorites and we try to grow those items. Asparagus only grows in May-June so it is done until next year, but you can expect lots of beets, carrots and squash now that its fall. Unfortunately we do not grow any potatoes, but we do grow delicatta squash which is very similar taste and texture to sweet potato in my opinion, and also Jerusalem artichokes, which are a more nutritious veggie that can be used much like potatoes. Thanks for your feedback and I think you will enjoy the fall lineup of veggies.
